Ops Sikap 999

Happy Tiger New Year, a happy day not limited to Chinese and tigers. It is particularly for everyone on this part of planet, equator, Malaysia. Rush, rush, rush, fast and quick, nobody should wait to reach hometown. Toll discounts to woo surface travel alas the amount not even compensate the recent fuel increased. Nevertheless, the number of vehicles passing through the hatred gates is greater than ever. Drivers using toll-free roads are perhaps rated the most forbearance drivers. Salute!

This time, I would like to say about speed limit, fines and enforcements. Ops Sikap during major holidays may be a way to reduce or prevent accident but I can say that we will continuously rename this Ops Sikap until 999 or more without significant achievements. I wonder why PDRM is too lenient on drivers using emergency lane, why just 15 minutes stop or Kit-Kat breaks? I will definitely applaud the move to slap with RM1000 ticket and ‘take-your-car-tomorrow’ from the police station. No more compromise unless emergency.

At driving school, the instructor favourite word is ‘drive slowly everytime’ while in many ads (or road safety campaigns) the slogan Biar Lambat Asal Selamat is commonly used. I do not know whether the authorities are aware that an accident in a highway will happen when there are huge speed differences among moving vehicles. Drive too slow may cause others to make mistake but too fast may cause you to make the mistake. Therefore, I would like to suggest the authorities to introduce some kind of guidelines and enforcements such as:

a. Small vehicles shall be driven at least 90 kmh on highways. Lower than 90 kmh is an indication of incompetence driver or the vehicles should be at Puspakom first. In a 3-lanes highway, I would suggest as 90, 100 and 110 kmh lanes. All modern cars are capable to run smooth and safely at 100 kmh.

b. Slow drivers at highway should be immediately stopped, fined and directed to use normal roads similar to superfast drivers. Let the two extremist endangers each other, real salute!

c. Wrong speed lane and slow car drivers are the reason busses and lorries can be seen in the fast lane. By enforcing the first suggestion, we can eliminate this reason provided each heavy vehicle is equipped with speed limiter (90 kmh) and tracking system.

d. All drivers must be made aware that motorcyclists are entitled to use a lane exactly as other vehicles. Consequently, motorcyclist must be urged to ride in the centre of a lane – not left side of a lane or emergency lane. Nowadays, all kapcai able to run exceeding 100 kmh, so ride according to the flow. Some riders do not know that most of the accident did not involve Mat Rempit, instead Pak Lebai riding to Surau or Kakak returning from work. When was the last time you saw a superbike downed on a highway?

e. Establish a rule of ‘advantage to smaller vehicle’ as in many countries. Heavy vehicles will tend to let others to pass. Cars will let motorcycles go without ‘drop-shot’ overtakes, the most common type of accident between the two.

The most kelakar part was – PDRM discount 50% if you pay summonses before certain date and eventually extendable. I would like to hear – You pay PDRM additional 50% after 31st December!

Finally, Sikap for who?
